Pacing for Longer Shoots

Pacing is particularly important for clients who engage in a full shoot. While my tendency is to start slowly and spend more time on our first set in order to help my client acclimate, I also recognize that each and every woman is different. Some will have a limited attention span or tire easily, and others will take longer to warm up and get past the nervous jitters. Ideally, however, I will start slowly, allowing her to relax and enjoy the experience. My aim is to shoot around two hours in order to cover a range of looks and poses across four sets. Sometimes, however, we’ll run over, although once we hit the two-hour mark, I know our time is limited. She will begin to feel emotionally and physically exhausted at this point. And I never want her to get to the point of exhaustion.

I remain hyper-attentive during the shoot, checking in as needed. And I design the experience so that it offers flexibility and readily accommodates the many different personalities coming through my studio door. I cannot emphasize enough how treating your clients all the same—with rigid standard formulas and limited flexibility—can hurt you more than you know, particularly when it comes to a niche as intimate and personal as boudoir.
